2. Consensus
Consensus answers research questions using peer-reviewed papers, and its distinguishing feature is a consensus meter showing whether the literature supports, contradicts or is split on a claim. That directional reading is genuinely useful during triage, when you need to know which way the evidence leans before committing to a position.
It also offers unusually granular search filters: publication year, study methodology such as meta-analysis or randomised controlled trial, journal quartile from Q1 to Q4, open access, citation thresholds and preprint exclusion. That gives more quality control at the search stage than most tools here.
There is a free tier, with paid access commonly reported around $9 to $10 per user per month. Its limitation is scope: it answers from scientific literature and is weaker outside it.

3. Elicit
Elicit is built for systematic review methodology rather than quick answers. Its own pricing page states it searches over 125 million papers and reports over two million researchers using it. The core capability is screening at volume against explicit inclusion and exclusion criteria, with structured extraction into custom columns, and its highest tier is reported to screen up to 40,000 papers in a single workflow.
One detail worth knowing before signing up: current analysis notes that Elicit’s free credits are a one-time allocation rather than a monthly refresh, and that report generation carries limits on paid tiers. Published prices vary considerably between sources, from around $10 to $12 per user per month at the entry level up to far higher team and enterprise figures, so confirm the current tier structure on Elicit’s own page.
Suits: systematic reviews, evidence synthesis and any project where you must document why each paper was included or excluded.
4. SciSpace
A domain note first: SciSpace now operates at scispace.com, having previously used typeset.io. Older guides linking to the former address are out of date.
SciSpace prioritises breadth over depth, searching a reported 280 million-plus papers across multiple sources, and extends past discovery into reading, extraction and writing. Its most-used feature is chat with a PDF, which explains dense passages in plainer language, and it adds citation formatting and a reference library.
Pricing is reported inconsistently: one analysis puts Premium at around $12 a month billed annually with a range of $0 to $70 across four plans, while another describes a free allocation of 100 credits a month with premium plans from $20 to $160 depending on features. Check the current structure directly. One documented limitation is coverage: its strengths lie in medicine and life sciences rather than the humanities, social sciences or engineering.
Suits: students and early-career researchers who need help understanding papers as well as finding them.
Discovery and citation graphs
5. Semantic Scholar
Semantic Scholar is free with no feature gating, covering a reported 200 million-plus papers, with TLDR one-line summaries, highly influential citation flags and a public API with embeddings for programmatic use.
Its relevance to this guide is partly what it does not do. There is no synthesis layer, which means no hallucination risk: results are papers from an index, not generated prose. For reliable discovery and citation-graph analysis without paying anything, it remains the baseline every other tool is measured against, and several of them search it behind the scenes.
Suits: free academic search, citation analysis and anyone who wants retrieval without a generative layer.
6. ResearchRabbit
ResearchRabbit builds visual citation networks outward from a small set of seed papers, surfacing related work you would not have found by keyword search. It is a discovery layer for the expansion phase of a review rather than a primary search tool.
Current analysis notes that as of 2026 it has no paid tier. That makes it, alongside Semantic Scholar, one of two genuinely free tools in this guide.
Suits: finding adjacent literature once you have a few key papers, and mapping how a field connects.
Citation verification
7. Scite
Scite does something none of the others do: it reads the context in which later papers cited a source and classifies each citation as supporting, contradicting or mentioning it. A paper with 400 citations looks authoritative until you discover a meaningful share of them dispute its findings.
That makes Scite the audit step rather than the discovery step. Elicit and SciSpace build an evidence base; Scite stress-tests it before you submit.
Pricing needs care. Several current sources report roughly $20 a month, or about $12 monthly on annual billing, with no free tier beyond a short trial on core features. Another describes both Personal and Organization tiers as contact-sales. What these tools cost
Three distinct pricing shapes are in play, and the free tiers are not comparable.

Freemium with a real free tier. Perplexity, Consensus and SciSpace all offer usable free access with limits on volume or advanced features.

Reference managers: where the output goes
None of the tools above replaces a reference manager, and it is worth being clear that Zotero and Mendeley are not AI tools. They store references, attach PDFs, generate bibliographies in the required style and insert citations into a word processor.
The realistic workflow is that discovery and synthesis happen in the tools above, then everything you decide to cite is exported into a manager as BibTeX or RIS and formatted from there. Zotero is free and open source; Mendeley offers a free tier with paid storage. Check export format support before committing to an AI tool, because a tool that cannot export cleanly into your manager creates manual work at exactly the point you least want it.

- Reading the source. A summary can accurately cite a paper and still misrepresent it. Open anything you cite.
- Judging quality. Citation counts measure attention, not correctness. A heavily cited paper may be heavily disputed, which is precisely what citation classification reveals.
- Field coverage. These indexes lean heavily toward medicine and the sciences. Humanities and social science coverage is thinner, and absence from an index is not absence from the literature.
